Episode 10: Tani Mintz-Sharp Edge Crossfit

In this episode, we sit down with Tani Mintz who owns Sharp Edge Crossfit in Evanston. Tani is a longtime friend of mine, a longtime Evanston and Skokie resident, and has an interesting story of how she got to where she is.

Tani first got interested in Crossfit when a friend took her there in college. Tani got so hooked that she ran a Crossfit in Milwaukee while in law school. She later moved to North Carolina and tried it out there. Eventually she found her way back to Evanston.

Tani’s reason for love fitness and sports started like every kid from the 1990s growing up in Chicago-Michael Jordan. Her AIM name was airmintz23 and it’s still her email address!

Even though Tani loved sports, she thought she would become a lawyer. She went to law school and thought she would stay involved in sports. She even sent resume to the general counsel for the Chicago Bears as a first-year law student. They did get back to her and brought her into Halas Hall. It was an amazing experience. She later decided that while it would be fun, she didn’t want to be behind the scenes. She didn’t want to work for the teams-she wanted to be hanging out with them.

Tani also has a deep passion for speed skating. It all started in in 2002 when she went with her family to the olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. She watched the speed skating competition and just loved it. She felt it in her blood. Afterwards she told parents she wanted to try speed skating and go to the olympics. She was a senior in high school at Evanston Township High School at that point. Tani decided to apply to Marquette because the main ice-rink for speed skating training is 5 minutes away from campus. She trained, did Cross Fit, and worked at Starbucks and succeed in qualifying for the olympic trials in the 3000 meter race!

For Tani, the busier she is, the more she excels. For instance, her routine in undergrad was to wake up, workout, go to classes, work at Starbucks from 8PM-12AM, and do it all over again. Variety in her day allows her mind to rest. Now that she owns SharpEdge Crossfit, she still works at Starbucks which is next door. She loves going to Starbucks where she can just make drinks and leave, as opposed to being in charge of everything.

Her focus for her customers at her gym is all about staying healthy. She wants to get people to be better, healthier people. She’s creating a healthy community. Her focus is on people growing and progressing. Tani says the hardest thing is walking through those doors.
